| Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu declared victory over his Jewish Leadership opponent Moshe Feiglin in the Likud Primary vote Tuesday night. Netanyahu won just under 75% of the votes for leader of the Likud party. But a review of those "Jewish values" reveals a distinctly non-kosher selection. How to Prevent a Genocide ![]() By Matthias Küntzel At the end of November 1941 – in the run-up to the Wannsee-Conference – Hitler received Hajj Amin el-Husseini, the Grand Mufti and leader of the Palestinians (see image). On this occasion Hitler stated that, after the defeat of the Soviet Union, "the hour of liberation" would arrive for the Arab world. Pro-German Muslims were designated to do the dirty work. But there was a problem: It was understood that German-style anti-Semitism would have little resonance in the Middle East. Democracy's Action Figures
By Yori Yanover My daughter and I belong to a relatively defenseless minority, with a history of getting rounded up and pillaged and burned and sent to exile whenever the local prince figured he couldn't afford to pay what we lent him, or the clergy needed to boost attendance, or the peasants were just plain starved for entertainment. To us, the descendants of defenseless merchants and scholars, the idea of government officials obeying the laws like everyone else is novel and sassy and wonderful, because we know it can and often does ensue differently. |
Being the Best, Being Me ![]() By Rabbi Gil Frieman Success for every person is different because every individual is a world unto himself. The Gemara tells us, "Man was created alone in order to teach that destroying one life is tantamount to destroying an entire world, and sustaining one life is tantamount to sustaining an entire world." The Egyptian March Of Folly ![]() By Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks Back in 1984, historian Barbara Tuchman published her book The March of Folly. In it she asked: How is it that throughout history intelligent people have made foolish decisions that were damaging both to their own position and to that of the people they led? Pharaoh's advisers could see clearly that he was leading his people to disaster, but he may well have felt that he was being strong while they were merely fearful. Leadership is only easy in retrospect. More Shidduch Challenges
By Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis While we are not permitted to gossip or speak pejoratively about others, we are required to respond honestly to specific questions regarding marriage partners. But we have to know how to ask. For example, instead of inquiring "Is he nice?" – which doesn't mean a thing – we zero in on specific concerns that reflect character and values. How does he get along with his co–workers or classmates? |
